Trio Tapestry is a collection of multi-level pieces for young string players. The pieces use a variety of musical styles including modes and contemporary harmonies based on the resonances of the open strings.
The pieces in Trio Tapestry feature flexible scoring, and can be played “mix-or-match” by any combination of violin, viola, and cello. The optional piano parts provide additional musical colour to the ensemble.
Each piece contains two very easy parts and one part for a more advanced player. The very easy parts use a limited number of pitches, frequently open strings only. The easy parts usually share the same rhythm and bowings as another voice. The more advanced part contains some chromatic notes and more rhythmic challenges.
The violin and viola parts are entirely in first position. In the cello trios, the more advanced part includes some shifting. This collection of pieces works well with multi-instrument, multi-level groups. It is also an ideal resource for violinists learning viola, who can become accustomed to the alto clef within the context of a musical ensemble.
