MAGIC CARPET is a collection of concert pieces for the youngest beginners on violin, viola, and cello, with piano accompaniment and CD.   These pieces use the same rhythms as the Twinkle Variations in the Suzuki Violin School, and can be played by children who are learning their first few pieces.  

The first eight pieces in MAGIC CARPET can be played as either solos or duets with piano accompaniment.  The beginner plays on open strings and the teacher or an older student plays an optional melody part.  In the violin book the beginner plays on open E, and in the viola and cello books the beginner plays on open A. To accommodate studios and families with children on various instruments, the optional melody parts are transcribed for violin, viola, and cello.

The other pieces in the collection, which are for solo instrument with piano accompaniment, develop string crossings and left hand finger placement.  

Many teachers will choose to have their students learn pieces in MAGIC CARPET by ear after listening to the CD, which is included with the violin, viola, and cello books.   Others will prefer to have their students learn the pieces by reading them.  All pieces on the CD’s are recorded at two speeds, with all pieces first played at the faster tempo, followed by the slower tempo which might be easier for beginners to play along with the CD.

NOTE:  The viola and cello versions of MAGIC CARPET are a fifth lower than the violin versions. In teaching situations where there is a mixture of violin and viola and/or cello beginners, it is best to use the viola or cello accompaniment and CD, and to have the violin beginners play on the A and D strings rather than the E and A strings.
